Three sections, one cover

How a folding mattress is built

A folding mattress is a mattress whose foam core is divided into sections, so that it folds into a compact bundle. Inside, it is made in the same way as all our mattresses made to measure: foam core, fleece wrap, sewn cover.

Three sections, folded in a zigzag

The sleeping surface is divided lengthways into three sections that are joined by the fabric. To store it, you fold the sections on top of each other in a zigzag. To sleep on it, you unfold them again. There is no frame or hinge.

Hook-and-loop straps hold the bundle

Hook-and-loop straps are sewn into the side. They keep the folded mattress together, so it does not open by itself when you carry it or when it is in the wardrobe.

Foam with a density of RG 40/50

The foam in the core has a density of RG 40/50. This is a high density, comparable to firmness grade H3. According to the data sheet, the compression set is 5 % at most (EN ISO 1856), so the foam hardly stays compressed. The guide to upholstery fillings explains what these figures mean.

0.5 cm thermal fleece around the core

A fleece wrap 0.5 cm thick lies around every foam core. It smooths the edges, protects the foam and keeps the cover sitting smoothly.

Removable, washable cover

The cover has a sewn-in zip. You take it off and wash it at 30 °C maximum with mild soap. The care instructions for outdoor cushions show how to put it back on.

10 to 15 working days to make

Each folding mattress is made only after you order it, in our workshop in Westoverledingen. Depending on the season, this takes 10 to 15 working days.

Standard sizes - from folding mattress 90x200 to 140x200

In the configurator, you enter the width from 30 to 300 cm and the length from 120 to 300 cm to the exact centimetre. You choose the thickness from 10 to 20 cm in 2 cm steps. The table shows the sizes people look for most often. The folded size is calculated: three sections of equal length on top of each other, with no allowance for fleece and cover. Before you order, measure your sleeping surface with the measuring guide for upholstery. The tolerances for made-to-measure products explain small differences.

What for

Where a folding mattress belongs

A folding mattress is made for situations in which you need a bed only from time to time. Depending on the use, size and thickness need a different look.

Guest bed for visitors

Unfold it, put a sheet on top, and the guest bed is ready. Afterwards, the mattress goes folded into the wardrobe or under the bed. For adults, the folding mattress 90x200 is the usual size. For a couple, choose the folding mattress 140x200.

Terrace, balcony and garden

Because the cover is sewn from outdoor fabric, the outdoor folding mattress works as a place to lie outside, on a terrace or balcony. What to consider when lying outdoors and when it rains is on the outdoor mattress page.

Camping, bus and van

For campers, the packed size matters in a bus or boot. A thinner mattress folds flatter. For the fixed bed in a motorhome, the cuts of the caravan mattresses usually fit better. The motorhome camping hacks collect tips for life on the road.

Children's room

For children staying overnight and for playing on the floor. The foam is tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 in product class I, the strictest class for baby articles. What the label tests is explained in What is OEKO-TEX.

Boat and berth

For a rectangular berth, width and length are enough, as with the rectangular motorhome mattress. If the berth has slanted sides or cut-outs, send us a sketch or template.

Four collections

Covers in Agora acrylic

We sew all covers from solution-dyed acrylic from the Spanish brand Agora, so the colour sits in the fibre core and not on the surface. Depending on the collection, lightfastness is 7 or 7-8 out of 8, and the manufacturer gives a 5-year guarantee on colour fastness. In the Martindale abrasion test (UNE EN ISO 12947-2), Agora Panama, Lines and Rayure reach 20,000 cycles, a solid value for everyday upholstery. Each card leads to an example product.

What for

Folding mattress, foldable mattress or outdoor mattress?

The terms overlap, and so do our mattresses. This page is about folding and standard sizes. The neighbouring pages have other focuses. You can find all categories under mattresses made to measure.

Folding and foldable mattresses share the same design

Whether you say folding mattress or foldable mattress, you mean a mattress made of several sections that you put together to store. If you need a special size, or mainly want to know how little space it takes in the wardrobe, read on at foldable mattresses.

Outdoor mattress for outside

The outdoor mattress is the same mattress, seen from the point of view of sun, rain and storage outdoors. That page says how the cover copes with wet weather and when the mattress belongs indoors.

Fixed mattress for caravan and motorhome

For the bed box in a vehicle, which is rarely square, there are separate cuts with rounded corners, slants and cut-outs under caravan mattresses.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A folding mattress is a mattress whose foam core is divided into several sections. Our folding mattresses have three sections that are joined by the cover and stack on top of each other in a zigzag to form a bundle. Sewn-in hook-and-loop straps hold the bundle together. In a few seconds, the mattress becomes a guest bed, and afterwards a bundle for the wardrobe again.

In construction, there is none. Both words mean a mattress made of several sections that you can put together, and some people also say folding guest mattress. Our folding and foldable mattresses are the same products with an RG 40/50 foam core, fleece wrap and a cover in Agora acrylic. You only choose size, thickness and fabric.

For one adult, 90 x 200 cm is the usual size, and for two people 140 x 200 cm. In between is 120 x 200 cm, if one person wants more space or a child sleeps with you. At 10 cm thickness, a 90x200 mattress folded is about 90 x 67 x 30 cm, and a 140x200 is 140 cm wide accordingly. Any size from 30 to 300 cm in width and from 120 to 300 cm in length is possible.

You can choose 10 to 20 cm in 2 cm steps. A 10 cm mattress is lighter and folds to a height of about 30 cm, which suits a boot or camper van. With 14 cm or more, comfort increases, but the bundle is then about 42 cm high or more, which matters for transport. If you carry the mattress often, choose the thinner one. If you sleep on it more often, choose the thicker one.

The cover is not waterproof in the strict sense. Agora acrylic has a water-repellent and dirt-repellent finish, so raindrops bead off. For Agora Panama, the water column is 180 mm, which is enough for dew and a short shower. In continuous rain, water can get through. In everyday use, this means: bring the mattress indoors after use.

Remove stains with lukewarm water, neutral soap and a soft cloth. For a thorough clean, take the cover off using the zip and wash it at 30 °C maximum with mild soap, without a tumble dryer. The foam core itself does not go in the machine.

Each folding mattress is cut and sewn only after you order it. Depending on the season, production in Westoverledingen takes 10 to 15 working days, and then the mattress is shipped. The configurator calculates the price straight away once you enter size, thickness and fabric.
