Side by side

Two options
next to each other

Where more than one solution fits, we place them next to each other - with the test values from the data sheets instead of marketing words. Nine comparisons, sorted by fabric, system and covering material.

Where are you right now?

Three questions, three routes

Depending on what you are deciding, a different comparison helps. One click jumps to the matching list.

Fabric qualities compared

Which fabric?

Four head-to-head pages on the qualities we work with - lightfastness, abrasion resistance and dyeing method.

Four fabric comparisons
Shading systems compared

Which system?

Awning, canopy, pergola, umbrella or sail - four comparisons on effort, cost and weather resistance.

Covering materials for wall cushions

Which covering?

Wall cushions can be covered in three very different materials. Looks, care and durability set them apart.

The four outdoor fabrics next to each other

The short version of all four fabric comparisons in one table. Every figure comes from the manufacturer data sheets; the full reading sits on the linked page. Agora values refer to the standard Liso and Panama variants.

In practice

What matters when comparing

Four points where comparisons on the web regularly fall apart - and which we therefore carry through consistently on our pages.

Only equal standards compare

A Martindale figure to ISO 12947-2 cannot be set against one to part 3. Where the standard is missing, the number says nothing.

The dyeing method explains the price

Solution-dyed cloth costs more than piece-dyed because the pigment sits inside the fibre rather than on it. That is exactly what drives lightfastness.

The location decides too

A fabric that lies out through summer and comes in for winter needs different figures from one that hangs on a sail all year.

Figures from data sheets, not from advertising

Every value on our comparison pages carries its source. Where a manufacturer publishes no value, we write that down instead of guessing.

Frequent questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how long it stays outside. If the fabric lies out through summer and comes in for winter, a water-repellent acrylic is enough. If it stays out all year, a solution-dyed premium fabric with 7-8 out of 8 lightfastness pays off. The four fabric comparisons on this page put the qualities side by side with every test value.

On the numbers, yes, if the fabric stays in the sun permanently. The surcharge over a piece-dyed acrylic runs at roughly a third depending on the design, and colour retention is far higher. For cushions in the shade or used only at weekends the difference is barely visible in everyday use.

From the manufacturers technical data sheets and from our own production experience. Every value carries its test standard. Where a manufacturer does not publish a value, the page states that explicitly - nothing is estimated.

Yes, and we recommend it. Shade and texture look different in your own light than on a screen. Through the fabric sample page we send you samples of the qualities that are in the running for you.

The four system comparisons start from the building situation. Under an existing patio roof different solutions apply than above an open terrace. What decides is panel width, fixing points and whether the shading should be retractable.

Let us know. We build these head-to-head pages along the questions our customer service actually receives - outside input is the best source for that.
