Outdoor curtains and hanging systems at a glance
An outdoor curtain is a fabric panel for a patio roof, balcony or pergola that you draw closed when needed and slide aside again. Whether for a balcony, patio or sloping roof, every curtain here is made to measure: you give us the height and width, and we sew. The two hanging systems are separate products and suit all four curtains.
Opaque or semi-sheer - the two Agora fabrics
The choice is between privacy and light. The opaque fabric is Agora Liso, the semi-sheer one Agora Air. Both are solution dyed, so the colour sits in the fibre core rather than on the surface. We also sew semi-sheer curtains from Dralon, which costs less but has a lower lightfastness. What UPF 50+ means is explained in the guide What is UPF, and what the grades 1 to 8 tell you under What is lightfastness.
| Fabric | See-through | Material and weight | Roll width | Lightfastness (ISO 105-B02) | UV protection (AS/NZS 4399) | Water |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agora Liso | opaque | 100% solution dyed acrylic, 260 g/m² | 320 cm | 7-8 out of 8 | UPF 50+ | water repellent, 180 mm water column |
| Agora Air | semi-sheer | 70% solution dyed acrylic, 30% flame-retardant polyester, 148 g/m² | 300 cm | 7-8 out of 8 | UPF 50+ | water repellent, not waterproof |
How we sew your made-to-measure outdoor curtain
You choose each edge individually. That turns the same fabric panel into an outdoor curtain with loops for a curtain pole, a curtain with eyelets for carabiners on a rope, or a taut panel with lead weight tape. The overview:
Top hem
Stainless steel eyelets with an 11 mm inner diameter every 10 or 20 cm, pleating tape in white, 7 cm high loops every 20 cm or a rod pocket for a curtain rod up to 30 mm. The rod pocket fits an existing curtain pole.
Bottom hem with curtain weight
5 cm turned over, with sewn-in lead weight tape of 70 to 85 g or with lead weight tape and corner eyelets. The lead tape is the curtain weight and keeps the panel steady in wind; the corner eyelets also let you fix it at the bottom.
Side hems
3.5 cm turned over, stainless steel eyelets every 50 cm or concealed, waterproof magnets every 30 cm. The magnets join two neighbouring panels and can be taken out for washing.
Tiebacks
70 cm long, 5 cm wide, made from the same fabric as the curtain. With one eyelet at each end or with a hook-and-loop fastener - use them to tie the open panel back at a post.
Up to 280 cm without a seam
Because both Agora fabrics come off the roll 300 and 320 cm wide respectively, every panel stays seamless up to 280 cm in height. Small deviations in measurements are normal with textiles, details under Tolerances for made-to-measure.
How to hang your outdoor curtain
We sell both systems as separate products in your length. The outdoor curtain installation guide takes you step by step with drilling dimensions. Important in advance: both are screwed or plugged into the structure. If you rent, clear this with your landlord first.
Stainless steel wire rope
The rope system consists of a 2 mm stainless steel wire rope, turnbuckle, two U-bolt wire rope clips and eye bolts. From 2 m of rope length, intermediate eye bolts are added, with a spacing of at most 200 cm so the rope does not sag. The lighter, airier solution.
Aluminium rail for wall or ceiling
Rails, brackets and end caps in aluminium, powder-coated in grey (RAL 7038) or white (RAL 9016), screws and carabiners in stainless steel. Brackets every 80 cm; from 130 cm in length the rail comes in sections. 90° curves are available directly, other angles we bend on request.
Runners with clamp or eyelet
The rollers are rubber-coated and run almost silently. The clamp grips a reinforced top hem, the swivelling eyelet takes curtains with eyelets or pleating tape via stainless steel carabiners.
Allow for ground clearance
The bottom hem should not lie on the floor or drag when you draw the curtain. That way it does not draw up moisture and stays clean. More in the outdoor curtain care guide.
Outdoor curtain, exterior roller blind or shade sail?
Many people first search for exterior roller blinds and end up at the curtain. Both protect from the sun; the difference lies in the construction. Our outdoor curtains belong to sun protection for the patio; what else fits under a patio roof is shown in the comparison sun protection for patio roofs.
Curtain instead of exterior blind
An exterior roller blind winds the fabric into a box above the window and usually runs in guide rails. The curtain needs no box; it is pushed aside and leaves the opening completely free. We do not sell exterior roller blinds.
Vertical privacy screen, not a roof
The curtain protects from the side, from low sun and from view. For shade from above there are shade sails and the retractable canopy under the patio roof.
At the railing, the balcony privacy screen
If you only want to close off the balustrade, you do not need a curtain up to the ceiling. For that there is the balcony privacy screen made to measure.
Not insect protection
Our fabrics are meant for sun, privacy and wind, not against insects. If you want to keep mosquitoes away from the balcony door, you need an insect screen, a fly curtain or another insect-protection curtain with a fine mesh.
