Winter protection for potted plants: pale made to measure fleece covers over plants on a wintry terrace

We sew the fleece cover to the height and girth of your plant - it sits securely without snapping shoots and goes on in minutes. The pale, breathable fleece lets air and light through at the same time. To be honest: it will not be frost-free underneath, and no fleece without heating can promise fixed hardiness ratings. But short cold snaps and icy winds are buffered by a few degrees, and the temperature swings less - which is often enough to carry sensitive potted plants through the critical nights.

A build in three parts

Each part for its own job

Instead of one sealed hood we deliberately use separate parts: a breathable fleece cover as the core, a rain roof over the crown only, and an insulated pot cover. That keeps the waterproof layer apart from the insulating layer - where sealed combination covers fail on condensation and rot, the air here keeps moving. You choose what you need.

Fleece cover as the core (main product)

The breathable made to measure cover in UV-stabilised fleece wraps the crown and trunk. It buffers frost and wind and lets condensation escape - the basic protection for any plant.

Rain roof over the crown only (accessory)

A waterproof roof in Cover-PVC keeps prolonged rain and wet snow off from above - deliberately over the crown only, never as a closed hood. That keeps the wet apart from the breathing fleece layer underneath.

Insulated pot cover (accessory)

In a container the root ball is the coldest point, because frost reaches it from every side. A padded, insulated pot jacket from our workshop protects exactly where it counts.

For every potted plant

Winter protection by type of plant

Potted plants are especially at risk in winter, because frost reaches the root ball from every side of the container. Frost protection for potted plants therefore has to keep both the crown and the pot in view, and breathe at the same time. We sew every fleece cover individually to measure - from small pots to a large winter plant cover for an olive tree. Whether one cover or several for the whole terrace, each one is sewn to fit.

Olive tree winter protection

The crown and trunk get a breathable fleece cover; the container is additionally insulated against frost at the root ball. Even a single olive tree gets its cover made exactly to measure.

Citrus & Mediterranean plants

Breathable covers for citrus, oleander and bay - protection from frost without letting the plant sweat under film.

Palms & large specimens

Large-format fleece covers for tall specimen plants - with a drawstring channel and hook-and-loop for a secure hold in wind.

Breathable rather than sealed

Fabric & properties

Breathability is the decisive point. A sealed film or a full PVC hood directly over the plant traps moisture: condensation forms, heat builds up in winter sun, and the plant rots instead of being protected. So we sew the plant frost protection cover from breathable fleece, which buffers frost and temperature peaks and lets condensation escape. A waterproof layer against prolonged rain goes on separately as a rain roof in Cover-PVC over the crown.

So the protection works

How your plant gets through the winter well

A cover alone does not make a good winter - a few habits belong with it. Horticultural sources largely agree here, and the steps are quickly done.

Air it on mild days

Open the cover on frost-free, mild days or fold it back - that lets trapped warmth and moisture out and gives the plant light and air.

Water occasionally

Evergreens transpire in winter too. In frost drought - frozen ground with sun and wind - the plant dries out despite the cover. So water moderately on frost-free days.

Insulate and raise the pot

Stand the container on wooden or polystyrene feet rather than cold stone slabs, and insulate it all round. The root ball is the most important lever.

No sealed film over the plant

Never wrap the crown in airtight film. Condensation builds up underneath, winter sun creates heat, and shoots rot. Anything waterproof belongs over the crown as a roof only.

Take it off in good time in spring

Remove the cover as soon as hard night frosts are no longer likely. Left on too long, the plant puts out weak growth in the dark.

So the cover fits

How to measure correctly

A few measurements get it right - and if in doubt we check them together before production, so crown and container are safely enclosed.

Measure height and girth

Measure the total height of the plant and the largest girth of the crown - that way the cover encloses everything.

Think of the container

If the container is to be protected too, measure its height and diameter for the root ball insulation.

Choose the closure

A drawstring channel, hook-and-loop or ties hold the fleece cover securely in wind and open easily.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Wrap the crown and trunk in a breathable fleece cover and insulate the container as well, so frost does not reach the root ball. Stand the tree in a sheltered spot against a house wall and raise the pot. What matters is fleece rather than film, so the plant does not sweat and rot - and that you air it on mild days.

Breathable fleece is the most suitable: it buffers frost and temperature peaks but lets condensation escape. For the container, insulation of the root ball comes on top. Airtight film directly over the plant is unsuitable, because moisture builds up underneath - a waterproof layer belongs over the crown as a roof only.

A sealed film or full PVC hood traps moisture. Condensation forms underneath, heat builds up in winter sun, and the shoots start to rot - the protection turns into its opposite. That is why crown protection here is always breathable. We use waterproof Cover-PVC deliberately as a rain roof over the crown only, never as a closed hood around the plant.

Air it on frost-free, mild days by opening the cover or folding it back - that lets trapped warmth and moisture out. Water only on frost-free days and moderately: evergreens transpire water in winter too and suffer frost drought when the ground is frozen and sun and wind dry the leaves. Waterlogging should be avoided just as much.

In a container the root ball is exposed to frost from every side - unlike in open ground. If the roots freeze through, the plant can no longer take up water and dries out despite protection on the crown. That makes insulating the container the most important lever, and it always belongs with the cover.

Fit the winter protection before the first hard frost - usually in late autumn when temperatures stay around freezing. Better a little early than too late, so the plant is not caught out. On days that are still mild, leave the cover open during the day.

Young olive trees are more frost-sensitive than old ones. Stand the container in a sheltered, raised position, insulate the root ball thoroughly and wrap the crown in a breathable fleece cover. Air it on mild days and water moderately when needed - that carries a young tree through the cold season too.

You get a made to measure fleece cover for your olive tree directly from us: give us the measurements or upload a sketch, and we sew the cover to fit. On request with a rain roof over the crown and an insulated pot cover. For questions about fabric and measurements our service centre helps.

Unsure about size or fabric?

Order a fabric sample or ask for advice - we check your measurements and find the right fleece cover for your potted plants together, including a rain roof and pot cover if you need both.
